Flat Lands, Western Queensland

The earth to the right and the earth to the left
is bare dirt, cracked clay, dark soil powdered to dust.
Only the skeletons of animals break the soft dull grey.

On these flat lands the asphalt extends forever.
The car shudders with bumps and speed
but it is as if the land is moving and we
are the still point between earth and sky.

On the horizon, dark lumps of trees
move slowly through the heat haze.
It shimmers as if the land
is dreaming of water.

straight road
wheat silos appear
above the heat haze

teaching her kid
road savvy
the nanny goat
