Kingdom Come

We asked the priest, who was intent
on sprinkling her coffin with holy water,
to tone it down. We were very Low Church
when we were into it. We learned ‘Our Father’
in our beds and were asleep before ‘Amen’.
He was good, Father John; he let us run the show.

So we wore pink and showered her coffin with petals.
We sang ‘All things bright and beautiful’ and quoted Leunig.
We told some funny stories, but mostly stories of love.
Father John talked of Kingdom Come,
but we reckon she’ll be happy enough with earth.
Soil and God were one and the same, to her.

This is from years ago now. I just like it, so thought I’d share. 🙂
